Dear Lizzy,
I hope I have a helpful comment or two for you. I am much newer at seriious insomnia than you and fortunately for me I stumbled across this website before going on meds. This website has a lot of great info. and folks real life experiences with meds is one big one. To me so far the regular mds and sleep docs are simply incapable or not interested in dealing with insomnia. You needed serious help a few years ago before starting meds and making your life worse. I would definitely except as a last resort not try the anathesia. My suggestions, do a search on sleep restriction on this website and read through the positive advice and experiences and suggested books. If you can find an md and sleep doc familiar with coginitive-behaviourial techniques--a hard task. Try to realize you are not alone in this even though it may appear that you are, try (even though I know its very hard) to not worry, try to be as positive about yourself and your future as you can.My best wishes, please follow up with your experiences.
