Heidi - EMDR

Posted by A-B on January 28, 2003 at 07:23:17:

Hi Heidi, Well after reading your posts on EMDR I did a little research into it just to see what it was all about and was intrigued by my findings. From what I can ascertain, EMDR is used mainly for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and various phobias, but I found little about it's effect or use with insomnia.

Knowing that you have suffered with this all your life, and that your life (by your account) has been pretty hassle-free, I was curious about how it worked for you, since the main premise is to have you recount traumatic/stressful events in your life while ungergoing the treatment. When I thought about what I might recount, I couldn't think of anything that was "unresolved" in my life. Not to say I've not had awful things happen, but I guess I must be good at moving on and "getting over it", because I feel that all my "traumas" have been resolved (at least to my satisfaction).

I also wondered if, in your case, it has more to do with the eye movement which simulates the dreaming phase. I would have thought that if you dreamt normally, this might have limited application. Not that I am questioning it's merit, but from what I've read about your particular brand of insomnia (which so closely resembles my own) it really struck me as the last thing that might help.

I'd love to hear more about your experiences now that I know more about the process.

Cheers
A-B : )
