hi grace, when i began weaning myself from nightly medications and started practicing sleep restriction and good sleep hygiene, i gave up wine completely for a while. (can't remember how long). previous to going on meds, i drank one or two glasses at dinnertime every night for many years. after starting meds, i used alcohol less.
it made a big difference giving it up and i was surprised how much more energy i had as well as making it much easier to stay awake until my designated bedtime. it really was a habit and the longer i went without, the easier it got.
since then, now that my sleep is under control, i drink wine on weekends only, like you are thinking of doing. i limit myself to one or two glasses with dinner, as a social thing rather than a habit, and that's worked out very well. but i didn't start doing that until my sleep was much better. i also gave up caffeine completely for a while, altho i was never a big coffee drinker. now i have one cup of tea or coffee when i get up in the morning, and that's it.
good luck to you,
beth
