Dear Heidi....Your post is so courageous and I admire your strength in trying so to remedy a situation that may at times feel insurmountable. I don't think it matters which problem is the cause for each one trigger off the other and therefore in the end it is difficult to determine which is the cause at all. The bottom line is that there is an unhealthy and unbalanced state within your body mind and you must try to harmonize the interaction between the two so that one does not terrorize the other. Remember when you are sad or depressed the hormones in your body change and when your hormones are altered then your emotional responses as well as your physical being is also being altered. It is difficult to know really where to begin. I as you felt that my insomnia was caused by a biological/organic problem. So that is where I began. Although I am sure I as many here over the years had developed some real perfectionism and control issues that were not completely resolved I determined my problem to be one of toxicity. As I began to detox my body from heavy metals that I had aquired in my body form 40 years of being in the art field,I not only began to feel emotionally better, but my sleep became better. As my sleep became better my emotions started to heal as well.So in the end one feeds off the other, but without sleep, I do not believe healing is possible.I think that the EMDR is a good therapy for you. It seems to calm you down and give you hope, so that is good in itself. If you feel that your problem could also be organiclly based have you tried nutritional techniques to stimulate neurotransmitter growth, detoxification methods if you have been on so many medications or vitamin therapy? I do hope you can get over your depression and feel well again.Know that we are all here and thinking about you, and wishing you well....Hope
