Hi Lisa - I agree that meds are probably more trouble than they're worth in a lot of cases, but if your doctor had just said "it's a phase, you'll get over it" you probably wouldn't have been too impressed (..especially if you were feeling all sleep-deprived and cranky - I know I sure wouldn't!..).
The point is though, that doctors just don't seem to investigate any further - oops - at all - into why you have the problem to start with. They just reach for the trusty ol' pen and prescription pad and shove you out the door. Yes - it may have been a temporary thing for you, for whatever reasons, but obviously those reasons were never addressed and things have not improved from there.
I guess it comes down to us to get tough with our doctors and demand they do more than dole out more pills. Make sure they run extensive blood tests to rule out obvious physical causes. Make sure they take time to find out what has been going on in your life to pinpoint any emotional issues, and follow through with appropriate action (perhaps some counselling, rather than anti-depressants). Make sure they book in a follow-up to see how things are going. They don't seem to want to take these steps, so it is up to us to make sure they do (and to disregard any of their snotty "who's the doctor here" glances).
At least with forums like this (which weren't around for us all those years ago) we are now much more informed about our condition and can hopefully do the same for the medical community at large.
Cheers
A-B : )
