keith, i can understand your fear completely. it is very powerful, i know. but you sound ready and motivated to give it a try, and as you point out, your sleep isn't good now, so sleep restriction isn't going to make it any worse.

i would recommend not restricting below 5.5 hrs. acutally i kept it at about 6 to start. it did take me a while to get the 6 hours consistently, but getting even 6 every now and then can be very restorative.

you also will have an easier time if you can work on your anxiety and negative thinking during the day. the jacob's book has a good section on negative thinking. another book which helped me a lot was the "anxiety and phobia workbook" by bourne. your situation sounds very similar to mine. i took a benzo nightly for about 5 months and had a hard time weaning off it. in fact, i started trazodone because i was having such a hard time. then i had a hard time getting off trazodone, altho not nearly as bad as the benzo withdrawal. following the guidance in those 3 books with great determination and patience finally got me out of that hell hole. you can do it too, and we're here to support you.
