Hi AJM - sorry to hear you are not doing to well. I know a little bit about bipolar disorder. From what I understand during the manic phase of the disease there is a decresed need for sleep. The person with classic bipolar I disorder may experience racing thoughts or euphoria or be involved in grandiose projects and just keep on working. It doesn't sound much like what most people report on here - which is not a decreased need for sleep.
That is not definitive. It is just what I understand from reading I have done. I have recently been "diagnosed" with a VARIANT of bipolar disorder (but without the mania). There are 4 classes of bipolar disorder - known as bipolar I, bipolar II, bipolar III, and bipolar IV. I fit none of those, but I cycle quickly between deep depression and "normalcy." Also, my depression does not respond to antidepressants. For the above two reasons I have been "diagnosed" as bipolar VARIANT. This diagnosis came two weeks ago from a doctor I had spent 15 minutes with, so I am not so sure I am accepting it as definitive yet. I think they just don't know what to do with me!
I don't know if there is any helpful information in there for you.
I hope you get into a better sleep cycle soon.
Heidi
