I had a bit of a look through the book stores at meditation books and found one that covered a whole range of techniques, from transcendental, to chakras, to breathing techniques. It gave me an idea of what different styles there were, and which ones might suit me. Some techniques are also better for "alertness", so perhaps aren't suitable to use in a pre-sleep routine, but have a look around (if nothing else, it's something relaxing to read!).
I can also fully relate to your problems with getting to sleep, staying asleep, and intense dreams/nightmares. As I've said many times on this site, vitamins have helped reduce the number of times I wake, but I still have problems with getting to sleep and vivid dreams. This has always been the case with me, but if you think yours might be exacerbated with stress/worry, then perhaps identifying and addressing these problems might be of help.
When I have had things on my mind, I try to work through all the possible scenarios, and all possible outcomes earlier in the day, which helps to ease my mind somewhat. Once I have exhausted all avenues, there's not much left for my mind to mull over once I'm in bed. If that doesn't help, I mentally recite a song over and over in my head until I literally bore myself to sleep! Whatever works right?
Anyway, I hope things improve for you soon. There are some great suggestions in this and earlier forums, so I hope there is something there that helps.
