Is insomnia self-perpetuating?

Posted by June on April 28, 2003 at 10:55:30:

Hi, I have had severe (avg. 2 hrs/night) insomnia for 2 years. Been though all the drugs (Trazadone, Serzone, Elavil, Ambien plus many other AD's) and herbs, practice good sleep hygiene and relaxation techniques, exercise regularly, and was tested for apnea. Nothing has really worked except Xanax, which is working less and less due to tolerance. I've only had the rare good night's sleep (6+ hours) in that time, and never for any nights in a row.

What I have been wondering is if it is possible that once the body gets so sleep-deprived your sleep system is "broken" and the body thinks severe insomnia is the norm. This is just an intuitive feeling I have. It's similar to how the less I eat, the less food my body seems to expect, and the more I eat, the more food my body seems to want.

Anybody else ever had this feeling? It's like some kind of monster that feeds on itself..
