Resetting our inner time clocks is one of the methods mentioned in some of the books recommended on this forum which is essentially what you described as one of your solutions and many people seem to have had success with it.
The exposure to light in the A.M. and decreasing it in the evening is also a proven method to regulate the sleep cycle...our bodies really do know what to do...we just have to help them along every once in awhile. Nice of you to take the time to share your info with the forum.
