My method for getting back to sleep is as follows.
First pick a 3 figure number, eg. 876, then each time you exhale count back one. At the same time make a very small movement with a hand and a foot, eg wiggle your finger, move your forefoot half an inch. Don't tell yourself you are going to do this until you fall asleep. Decide to do it until you reach for example 750 which helps to keep you focussed. If your mind still wanders picture the number each time you count, maybe in an elegant script. Basically you are boring yourself to sleep. My sister counts in french which is another way of stopping your mind from straying.
This does work for me but not if I'm very fidgety and anxious. I usually lie awake half an hour or so and try to get cosy and relaxed first.
Hope it helps.
Buster
