Posted by Isa on May 27, 1999 at 21:19:04:Hello everyone!
Well, I haven't seen my case outthere yet. I hope someone can help me or give advice or suggestions.
So... I took the Bar exam in July 98 and got no sleep at all before the exam (the exam has a portion with 200 MCQ questions that are well known for being tough because the examiners don't give you right answers, that would be too easy since law students usually study hard and can answer questions related to their lessons or notes. So they give only 4 wrong answers and you gotta pick the less absurd one basically, it's very tough, and to put it in a nutshell you really need to be alert and your mind needs to work fast, all the more if English is not your first language, which is my case). So first time got no sleep, failed. Tried several things: warm milk, a little bit of red wine, making the room too hot, making it too cold, listening to walkman, music, having someone play guitar and lullabies etc. The thing is I didn't want to take any pill because I was afraid to feel drousy the next day, which is the last you want to happen for the Bar exam. Anyway, I guess I was too stressed and got no sleep.
Second round, February 99, I was convinced it would not happen to me again not to get any sleep before the Bar exam because I was so so prepared, and also because it's just not believable: I never have sleep problems outside of the Bar exam phenomenon. So anyway I was very well prepared and sure I would make it. My performance during preparation time was satisfactory and guaranteed me 70% chances of passing answers, well... I didn't even do 50% on the actual bar exam cos guess what? I got no sleep. That was crazy. I had had a half glass of red wine. I was totally relaxed because I had spent a delightful dinner with a good friend, laughed a lot. I had even spent an hour in the swimming pool that evening to physically tire myself thinking it would make me sleep like a baby for sure. My friend did some relaxing massages. It was all relaxing. Had to be up at 7 AM the next day D Day for the exam. Midnight still no sleep. So I had taken with me some herbal pills found at a local grocery store. I had tried those before the exam and they perfectly worked, of course the night before the exam they wouldn't work! Took one, then 2, didn't work. So again nothing worked. Around 4AM or so I tried to imagine some clip or dream (a little bit of what some people call "lucid dreaming") but it didn't really put me to sleep. So got no sleep and performed poorly on the exam, particularly on the 200 multistate MCQs. It's a bit a tragedy for me cos I was never used to failing on exams, in fact I never had any sleep problems before an exam before I got into the Bar exam phenomenon! I decided to give it a third try next July because I am not a quitter. I'm studying again like crazy since that's what's needed, but I know for certainty I will have sleep problems to deal with for the Bar. Don't want to be naive this time. And I'm not sure what is best? Have a physician prescribe some good medication that would not fail putting me to sleep, yet not making me drousy at all for the exam? Or trying hypnotherapy maybe? or delta/thetra tapes or What ?? Or spending hundreds of dollars trying to cure exam anxiety by seeing a psychologist? Or what?Any help will be very precious, i am desperate to find the solution for my sleeping problem just the 1 night before the Bar exam.
Thanks everyone in advance!
Isabelle
