How can I get some shut-eye?

Posted by Aurelia on May 31, 1999 at 03:19:20:

I consider myself to be high-strung and people around me do,too. It seems like when I have a big day or an important day the next day, I can`t get to sleep the night before! I usually feel tired at around 10-11p.m. and go to bed. It feels good finally getting to bed but I toss and turn practically all night. Sometimes it seems as if my mind won`t "shut down" for a few hours, it just keeps going and going. I smoke and drink Coca-Cola and have eliminated both at least 2 hours before going to bed and that has helped some. But I can`t seem to stop thinking about things (i.e. bills, work, important events coming up, etc)! I`ll sleep for 2-3 hours then change positions and I`m awake for the rest of the night.

Sometimes it`s just the amount of sleep I get that make it harder the next night to sleep.I used to be alright with 4 or 5 hours of sleep and be alert. Now I try to get 6-7 hours because I feel so exhausted with a measly 4-5 (longer hours at new job requires MORE alertness than previously). What happens now, though, is that I can`t seem to get the right amount of hours right. I`ve started with 4 hours and worked my way up to 8 and STILL feel the same amount of exhaustion. I feel more alert with 10-12 hours of sleep and that seems to me to be too much! I feel as though my whole evening is gone when I go to sleep at 8 p.m. to wake up at 6:30, you know? Then the next night I find it hard to fall asleep between 10-11 p.m. like I usually do.

I`ve taken Tylenol p.m. once and it worked but I can`t take sleeping aids because I sometimes get this insomnia in the middle of the night and if I take something then I won`t be able to wake up on time or feel groggy when/if I do.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Aurelia
