I was interested in your story because I am attempting to use the same methods but am very far from being cured! I have had phases of insomnia lasting a few months at a time for about 4 years now, but the present one has lasted since last October and is characterized by the loss of a couple of nights sleep a week. It has got a bit more difficult recently to get any sleep at all in recent times when I have had difficulty whereas there were many occasions previously when I would get a little sleep.
I have obtained a book called 'No More Sleepless Nights' by Hauri and Linde and there is a program to cure conditioned insomnia called the Bootzin technique. The idea is to associate the bed with sleep and not frustration so you do as you say and go to sleep only when you are really tired. I never go to bed until my eyes have actually closed involuntarily, but I often find the actual moment of anxiety surrounding closing my eyes when I am in bed is too stimulating somehow, my heart starts to beat and my mind becomes alert again. The idea if this happens is to get up again until you once again become tired and have another go, but this is much more difficult than succeeding the first time I find.
I was interested in what you said about "training your body to succumb to sleep" rather than willing yourself. Are there any specific things you do when you shut your eyes to go to sleep which aid this process? I think probably my problem is conditioned anxiety around the act of falling asleep and I need to find ways to relax myself then. Any ideas?
