What were your best sleep experiences?

We've all read about what constitutes a good sleep environment: quiet room, darkness, comfortable bed, etc. Those are obvious, logical sleep needs. I wonder if there could be other qualities of a good sleep environment that may not be quite so obvious. To at least get a preliminary idea about that, I'm interested in learning about and comparing the places and situations in which other insomniacs have experienced their best sleep.

I'll start with my own examples and I hope others of you will add yours. One good sleep experience for me was on a small trimaran anchored in San Francisco Bay - in the bay, itself, not at a mooring. Every night I spent on that crowded, uncomfortable little boat, I slept like a log. (About half the time we went sailing, it was during a "Small Craft Warning" so the sea was often very choppy.)

When we returned to shore from a long enough sail that I had become used to the motion of the water, when I went ashore it felt like the earth itself was moving in waves for the next few hours. If we came ashore late enough that that sensation didn't have a chance to wear off before I went to bed, I slept like a log in bed that night, too.

I ran across a post here a few days ago from a man who stated that he slept well when he went camping. I've been looking for it since then and can't find it. I hope he'll respond to this.

I once had a wonderful sleep on a big boulder in a park in Southern California. The mosquitoes were biting so badly that I left our tent and climbed up onto a boulder to get above them. The boulder was about 10-15 feet higher than the rest of the campground. I didn't take any sort of air mattress or covers with me (it was very hot and there was a breeze up there). Somehow the slope and the indentations in the boulder fit my anatomy perfectly and I had a wonderful sleep and no backache the next day.

Before that my best sleeps were as a child in the back seat of a moving car. (My rocking chair also makes me very relaxed and drowsy. Too bad my bed doesn't rock.)

Does any of this strike a chord with anyone? If not, where (and under what circumstances) have you experienced your best sleep? Maybe there'll be some patterns there somewhere.

Thanks,

Raynelle
