pregnant, bipolar disorder and sleepless

Posted by Diane B. on June 14, 1999 at 03:57:28:

I've been treated for bipolar disorder for over 5 years now, and have had sleep problems off and on throughout. Now that I'm pregnant, I'm able to take only a fraction of the medicine I needed prior to pregnancy (its been okayed as safe). I didn't take any meds in the first trimester, and I experienced lots of depression but my sleep wasn't as bad. Now that I'm back on a small amount of medicine, my mood disorder is pretty well controllable (not too many symptoms) but my sleeplessness is horrible! Often I stay up all night, even after I've been up since early that morning. Sometimes when I do get to sleep I'll only sleep 4 or 5 hours at a time and then I'm up again, and sometimes I'll need to sleep 12, 13 hrs and I'll still not feel rested. I'm just all over the place, and it doesn't seem to help to stay up and not nap, nap or exercise (although the exercise is not regular because I'm usually too tired during the day to manage it.) I know that late pregnancy is a notoriously bad sleep time due to discomfort, but I've had problems ever since I re-started my medicine and all through the second trimester. Anyone had experience with this? I don't want to take any drugs (I have in the past due to the depression disorder and meds side-effects, but not in a long time.) because I'm pregnant, but I'm starting to get desperate and really irritable because the sleep is so erratic. Thanks!
