Desperate Mom, you sound just like me a couple years ago. I took Ambien for about a month straight until it became less and less effective. Then I switched to a drug called Remeron, and took that for about a month straight. It is a sedating anti-depressant that worked very well for me. I slept great, but had a very hung-over feeling for the first several days that I took it. That got better though. Eventually I discovered that the drug seemed to stay in the body for a long time, and I was able to sleep even if I took it only every other night. That gave me confidence to gradually learn to sleep on my own again. I had set-backs from time to time, but got better and better as time went on. I don't know if it will be the answer for you, but it might be something to try. I sleep drug-free about 98%of the time now.
