Xanax withdrawal and how to ween?

Posted by Dee on August 04, 2003 at 18:38:58:

Hi, I've been on Xanax 3 months for anxiety and panic attacks. I was started at 0.25 MG twice a day, then about a month ago got moved to one 0.25 mg in the morning and two at night. So, I am taking a total of 0.75 MG a day. I've had about 3 or 4 bad days in those few months, where I have taken as much as 1.5 MG in a day period, but it was just for that one day and I went right back to my regular dose. My doctor doesn't like or believe in keeping people on Xanax and has tried twice to cut me off cold turkey. So now, I want to ween myself off so I can be medicine free. I feel like this is a better option, I'm only 18 and I don't want to depend on medicines. So, my first question is, being on the dose that I'm on, is it going to be hard for me to ween myself off? Will I experience some of the BAD withdrawal effects I've heard of? My worst fear is the seizures I've heard you can get from withdrawal. And *that* is scaring me to death! Secondly, how do I go about weening myself off?

I was going to start by taking 1 in the morning and 1 and a half at night for 2 weeks, then go to 1 in the morning and 1 at night for 2 weeks, then a half in the morning and a half at night for 2 weeks and then just a half of one once a day for 2 weeks, and then after that, just stop completely. Is that tapering slowly enough? And once I do the half of a pill (half of .25) once a day for two weeks, do I just stop all together, or do I skip, like I've heard? Half one day, skip a day, half one day, skip two days and so on...? And if so, how long do I skip? I want to taper good enough, but my doctor is on my back with threats of not refilling my meds. So I want off these, but I want to do it right. Anyone and everyone who can please give me advice, I'd be so greatful!
