Dee, everyone's CNS is different and each one's experiences are different HOWEVER...Xanax is a powerful benzo and you should taper off VERY SLOWLY. The web site that Hope mentioned is actually www.benzo.org.uk
They advocate switching over to a longer half life benzo such as valium (it stay's in your system longer so you don't get the between dose withdrawels. They also advocate reducing your dose by 10% every 2-3 weeks depending on how your body is reacting. You might try bigger cuts initially and then smaller ones as you get lower on your dose. You have to play it by ear because like I said, everyone is different. Some people have an easy time getting off and then some people with delicate Central nervous systems have a very difficult time...so you just have to wait and see where you fit in.
The key however is to go slow. It's not a race and the idea is to get off them with the least amount of discomfort. You should find a Dr. who is willing to work with you on YOUR schedule. Most Drs. don't understand benzo withdrawel. Benzo's are not stored in the fat and will be out of your system fairly quickly depending on their half-life. What they do is to change your receptors (that send out electrical impulses that tell the brain what to do). It takes time for your brain to heal and the receptors to return to normal. Tha's why no amount of water (which is good for you anyway) or cleansing will help. Only time. You should absolutely eat healthy...stay away from carbs, no smoking, no drinking alcohol, moderate exercise everyday, and try to limit your stress.
Check out the web site and please post any follow-up questions. Hope this helps.
