Back to Sleep Restriction 101

Well, after a couple of years of NOT having to follow a sleep schedule, I'm going to go back to one. I followed a sleep restriction plan 2 years ago to deal with pretty serious insomnia and it seemed to really help. I continued to practice good sleep hygiene, using Ambien and Tylenol PM occasionally, with pretty good results. However, my use of Ambien has become increasingly frequent and I'm not able to sleep a full night many nights now without it. So, I will go back to the basics: Setting a schedule of 7 hours; not going to bed until I'm drowsy; getting up at the same time every morning; not staying in bed awake for more than 15-20 minutes before getting up and reading nearby until drowsy again, etc. I will still allow myself to use Ambien after 2-3 very short nights, if that occurs (which I hope it doesn't). I must admit, I'm dreading some of the effects of SR I remember...some short nights, feeling zonked the next day, etc. But it really didn't take too long for my sleep to improve which I hope happens again this time. And I remember getting a lot done in those morning hours when I had to get up so early and get myself engaged in activity to keep from lying back down on the couch and falling asleep!

I'll keep you posted on my progress, but in the meantime, I'd love to hear from anyone who can relate to the position I find myself in. How were your experiences going BACK to sleep restriction after having been off for quite a while? Was it different and if so, how? Any suggestions for me in trying this?
