Dear Madcat.. Yes you make possibly have DSPS. There are many people whose circadian cycle does not particularly coincide with the functioning in the external world. My uncle also could not go to bed before 3:00-4:00 a.m. and woke up at 11:00 a.m. Many writers and other creative people seem to claim that they are more creative at night and eventually land up with insomnia. I am wondering if this is a recent event . What were your childhood years like? I asume you went to school. Were your sleeping hours normal than? You need to get on a regular routine, sleeping olny certain hours of the day not whenever you can catch a couple of hours of sleep. This will exercabate the problem and prolong it.....You have two choices to sleep the hours you feel comfortable with, despite the inconvenience of sleeping during the day and being up at night, and adjusting your life accordingly or try to reset your circadin cycle to a normal sleeping pattern. YOu are supposed to adjust sleeping patterns 15 minutes every day. I think you are supposed to go foward from the time you are sleeping to the time you would like to sleep instead of going backwards. It may take you a couple of weeks to accomplish this but you have to be strict and unyielding. You could also possibly try sleep restriction which also limits your time spent in bed to just the minimal amount of hours necessary to provide core sleep, and then increasing the time gradually. There are many posts on sleep restriction over many forums to help you....I understand your physical problems. When you are deprived of sleep there are a host of physical ailments that can occur. The best you can do is try to get some physical exercise daily, eat nutritiously, and try to maintain peace and some quiet in your life. I for a very long time had the opposite problem that you have, going to bed before 9:00 p.m. and waking up in the middle of the night around 2:00 or 3:00..Now I am able to go to sleep at 10;00 and am waking up around 5:00 to 6:00 which is very gratifying. So hang in there and don't get anxious. You will conquer this eventually.......Best of luck...Hope
