I know the strict sleep restrictioners wouldn't approve and it may not work for everyone, but... I will continue to lie in bed after awake if I feel I can do it and be relaxed. If I am trying to get back to sleep and/or frustrated that I cannot, I get up and read or do something else. I feel that it is the time I spend lying in bed trying to get to sleep that work against my sleep patterns. My experience seems to bear this out.
