I came to same conclusion. My sleep problem was so resistent to remedy that if I didn't get bed rest, even though not sleeping, I wouldn't have been able to go on at all. Even a comfortable recliner is not the same as 'bed rest', lying with your head flat and room to move your limbs to any comfortable position. In my experience, my skeletal muscles, legs, arms, neck muscles, back muscles and other muscles that I can 'control', i.e. everything BUT my heart muscle and eye muscles, restored themselves with just not moving them so this was of great help (to getting around). The things that can't be stopped, my heart and rapid eye movements of eyes when in and out of light stage sleep were hurt the most. Consequently I have eye damage, very bad eye sight when I never wore glasses through school and perfect eye sight growing up; also can't exercise or do anything that raises my heart heart because my heart is sooo very tired. Throught my worst of sleeping trouble, I felt like I was over 100, yet in my 30's. In fact my 90+ greataunt could make the steps in my home easier than I could. I was out of breath, she wasn't, after one flight. (I bet she couldn't have taken another flight though!)
I did the same as previous poster, if I was relaxed and enjoying the rest, I let myself get it, up to a point. If it got an hour after my set 'getup' time I would get up as I felt staying in bed much past that, would effect the next night sleep 'to bed' time. However if I woke up at 3 am and get up time is 6 am and I am very relaxed and very comfortable and not angry about not sleeping, etc. I stay in until 6 am for example and this did not wrech havoc with my going 'to bed' time at all. In fact when I have forced myself up anyway at 3 am as in such example, I dragged all day and very much needed to go to bed earlier than my planned time, so wreck havoc with my sleep schedule. I tried all different ways of handling this issue of when to stay in and when to get up and this is my conclusion for what worked best for me, my assoc with bed and keeping to a schedule.
