i think it's important to remember that sleep is a natural process, which can be regained naturally in most cases. when that is not the case, then meds are certainly life savers.

the problem that most insomniacs run into is that doctors prescribe the meds even BEFORE attempting other methods to control it. this often leads to dependence on the meds and feelings of loss of control, which can exacerbate the problem. that is why people are afraid to get started on that road, since it can turn into a lifetime of reliance on drugs, or at the very least, make recovering from insomnia take that much longer.

i also suffer from anxiety, and i do think it is partly genetic, partly the way i was raised. there are times i resort to meds to combat it so i can sleep, but i am fortunate that i do not need to do this on a daily or even monthly basis anymore.

if insomnia is the main cause of a person's anxiety and they are functioning well in other aspects of their life, they are good candidates for trying to combat it through "natural" means on a day to day basis.

this fact is especially encouraging for all the younger people on this forum, especially women who are hoping to get pregnant and have been advised by their doctors not to take most medications.
