ok, now i can finally post! well, i've been lurking for a while and just typed up a long post only to have it unsuccessfully deleted ):....i have had insomnia now for about 2 months (since August 15, 2003). It all started with one night of 4 hours sleep due to an early morning appointment. The next night i was anxious b/c i only slept 4 hours and decided to try and sleep at 10 pm, which is a lot earlier than my regular bedtime of 2 am before the insomnia started. Well, that night i was unsuccesful and only slept maybe 1 hour. I went to my doctor and had bloodwork done and everything was normal. He gave me Ambien which didn't work b/c i was anxious. I then started taking Temazapam (Restoril) at 15 mgs and have been taking it for about 2 months now. Last week i decided to try and lower the dose of Temazapam to 7.5 mgs and ironically it gave me the same amount of sleep as the 15 mgs. Basically, it takes a little over an hour for me to fall asleep with the Temazapam and then i only sleep for 3 hours and wake up wide awake. For example, last night i took the 7.5 at 12:45 am and fell asleep around 2:15 only to wake up about 3 hours later at 5:45. I decided to not take another 7.5 at that time and just laid in bed until 11 am ( big no no for SR, i know). Well, i do have the book by Bourne for Anxiety and just order the books by Wiedman and Jacobs and am thinking about trying SR.
My big worry about SR is that i'll be so tired but never be able to fall asleep. If i do take the Temazapam every 3 nights then i'll be getting 3 hours of sleep after being so sleep deprived from the SR.
I'm only 24 and definitely have anxiety issues b/c of heart palpitations from before but i've been working on that with my therapist. I've received a clean bill of health from all my docs, but need to get my regular sleep back to feel good.
Any suggestions or words of advice would be greatly appreciated. I've read about the SR success stories so that at least gives me some hope. I've been doing the presleep relaxation but it hasn't worked. My problems are basically sleep onset (can't fall asleep) and then sleep maintenance once i do fall asleep (with the temazapam). Thanks for any help, and i'm glad to be a part of the group. Take care everyone.

best,
alex
