Hi Alex,

You have definitely come to the right place. Since you recently started having insomnia, you can more quickly deal with the problem. Follow the following steps religiously and you should see improvement:

1. Follow sleep restriction religiously - 6 hours per night. This is key! You must do this day in and day out no matter how tired you are.
2. Work on controlling your anxiety and/or depression and never try to control your sleep.
3. Read the Anxiety and Phobias workbook referred to on this website.
4. Keep yourself really, really active with everything from exercise to hobbies, to work, friends, etc. Remember that your body's sleep system operates on "prior wakefulness" so that the more energy you exert during the day and the more you tire yourself out the greater the pressure from your body to sleep. Even while watching TV, I roll back and forth on a large blow up ball to keep my body moving and forcing it to become tired along with relaxing my mind. THis is key as well!
5. Work on trying to be a more confident, positive person. Take charge of your life and work relentlessly to combat your problems and deal effectively with stress. I watched many movies of very confident people and tried to emulate them.
6. Eat well and take care of yourself. This will boost your body image even if you aren't sleeping that well and will make you a happier person.
7. Instead of worrying about sleep, put all your energy into finding ways of combating your problem.

Wishing you great success and a happy life. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Cassidy
