Can't Stay Asleep

Posted by Stella on October 16, 2003 at 10:09:25:

I have had insomnia for most of my life--usually I sleep better during the day; I think that this is because of traumatic childhood experiences that occurred at bedtime which was never very safe for me. I have always tried to work around it, and take 2nd and 3rd-shift jobs that would allow me to sleep during the day. I always had problems getting to sleep, but lately I can't seem to STAY asleep. I wake up after 3 or 4 hours, and I feel too restless to sleep and yet too tired to accomplish anything with the time I am awake. I have been on Klonopin since a teenager, and I will be 33 next month. I know that I have built up a tolerance, but going through withdrawal right now is something that I am just not ready to do. If anyone has any ideas on why I am waking up after short periods, other than sleep apnea--let me know. Any advice or ideas at this point would be greatly appreciated. I am severely depressed and feel completely dysfunctional. I have tried melatonin and eating tryptophan-rich foods, but I am still having trouble staying asleep. I also see a therapist, and I am trying to stay "action-oriented," but I am feeling very discouraged.

Thanks.
Elizabeth
