From all the research that I have conducted, it is clear that increasing your time in bed should be done very gradually. I would shoot for a goal of 15 minutes earlier. Then after some success with that bedtime, add another 15 minutes. An hour earlier is too big a jump. Your mind and body are conditioned to 6 hours as you said so if you go to bed an hour earlier, you will likely wake up an hour earlier. Not everybody needs 8 hours of sleep and to be honest, us insomniacs should be quite pleased with 6 hours of restful sleep. In my own case, I got the point where I was getting 7 hours and that felt great. However, I think I got greedy too quickly and my sleep has gone done the tubes again. Part of this is my own fault because I haven't done anything about the stressors in my life so I went through a period where my focus was sleep and then as it returned, my focus shifted back to my problems. Yuck! In your case, I would shoot for 15 minutes earlier for a week or two, if that works then try another 15 minutes and then you have added a half hour. Your body will need time to adjust so be patient and don't be greedy like me. Shame on me!
