Sleepynj - I found your posting very encouraging. I haven't been looking at this site for a long time because it scared me that no one seemed to get better!

I have had insomnia now for 5 years and during that time have dealt with it by using the usual range of meds, which of course only helped temporarily at best. I have conditioned myself over this time to believe that I can't sleep without a pill of some sort. Anyway three months ago I went cold turkey on all meds. I hoped my body would eventually find its own sleep pattern, no matter how long it took (6 months was my goal). I don't feel like I'm really getting anywhere yet though - still exhausted every day and most of the time very fitful, shallow sleep for maybe 3-5 hours. I have maybe one or two nights a week when I sleep 7 hours but still can be exhausted the next day (maybe due to sleep debt?). I lie in bed all night as I can't force myself to get up. I'm also worried this might make me more anxious. In the morning I often wake up having no idea when I went to sleep or how much sleep I have had. (Maybe because of this and because I'm still so exhausted every day I can't tell whether I'm making any progress.)

I've been thinking about trying SR (tried it a couple of years ago but just about went insane). Anyway I think I could maybe cope with it a bit better now. Did you get to the point during the day when you were so tired you had to lie down (I do this nearly every day - sometimes several times a day). Is this something you're not supposed to do with SR?

If sleepynj and/or any others who have had success with SR can give me any comments, that would be great! Thanks!
