Hi Maryflo,
Thanks for your response. I've probably had a total of about 6 years of psychotherapy. Had a rough childhood with an alcoholic father but really think I worked thru those issues with a great therapist, but you never know. Therapy is probably something I can resume, and check on whether indeed my subconscious has reacted to any childhood events as traumas. What is EMDR?

As far as the other, I have done sleep restriction and it doesn't help. I can go weeks at a time without sleep if I'm not on my meds, no matter how tired I am. I feel as though I am resistant to meds as opposed to sensitive to them. I can take 3 Ambiens and they do nothing to me! I was taking oral Prometrium, but my doc says the less processed by the liver, the better, so we switched to the cream. I don't think it was really providing much in the way of sedation after the first month or so.

Yes, Estazolam is a benzo. I don't take it every night, but have increased my usage lately as I have been weaning off of the Elavil, so I wonder if I might be experiencing "intermittent" withdrawal from that on the nights I don't take it. I don't have apnea, but I haven't had a sleep test in quite a while. Maybe a new doctor is in order!

Thanks for the brainstorming....it's always helpful to have someone else's ideas/experiences to add to your own. This is a great place--everyone here knows what an insomniac goes through. It's hard to understand unless you are one...

Thanks!
