Posted by the crusader on February 11, 2004 at 13:07:40:Hi All,
I have had insomnia now for over 12 years. At it's worse, when I was in the Army, I thought I would not survive. I did and since then I have had good years and bad years. I am currently going through a bad patch again and averaging 2-3 hours. Funnily enough I am not anxious this time because I know it will go, and I have found from past experience that if i get angry with it, then it feeds the insomnia and I can kiss the night completely goodbye. Now the question. I am 47 years old and male. I am a musician and for as long as I can remember have enjoyed a drink. When I was in the Army my drink level went up trying to block out the noise from the other rooms so at least I could fall asleep. When I got out (after 17 years service) I had a health check and the liver was ok?? I had stuck to beer in the Army.
Since then and for almost 10 years (bar 1 year I took off to test myself) I have had a drink at night, either wine or beer. I never drink in the day and I do not get drunk. I found the wine (2 glasses just under a half bottle .75litre) would get me off and if I woke I would fall asleep again. However being the eternal hypochondriac I realise that this is above the guidelines (who makes these rules)and wonder if I am doing myself harm? For the last 2 nights I have not had a drink and also not slept very well, 2 nights before that though I did have a drink and still did not sleep well. The year I took off my sleep patterns were no worse or better. I do enjoy the wine to unwind as being a musician can be stressfull especially after 4 or 5 solo's?? So can anyone tell me do they drink more less or nothing and wht to do. Many Thanks C
