I don't think a half bottle is excessive for a man, unless you're a midget and short on body mass, or actually a woman in disguise and short on the biochemistry to process the stuff. A half bottle isn't good -- you might be a little on the edge -- but it's not terrible. If your liver started showing stress, that'd be another matter.

I don't think there's any big relationship between alcohol and sleep. If you wake up several hours after drinking the wine, especially if your heart's pounding, then you know you drank too much. And in case you have apnea, alcohol makes that worse. And I think alcohol eats up B vitamins, and you need those for your nerves and to be able to handle stress.

In a perfect world you would have other ways to unwind, like yoga, slow breathing, etc., etc. But it's not a perfect world. My vote: Run your concerns by your doc and see what he or she thinks, and get your liver enzymes checked every year. Or maybe reduce your wine levels in order to reduce your worry levels.
