MOST SEDATIVE MEDICINES

Posted by Omoplata on February 24, 2004 at 09:29:29:

Hi,

My problem has always been an inability to fall asleep (my sleep quality is not great either, but that is not my primary concern.) Therefore, the most sedative drugs have worked best for me. A tetracyclic antidepressant called Tolvon -mianserin HCL- is very sedative and knocks you out at night. Unfortunately it is not available in the US, and I am unable to get it from Europe right now. Tricyclic antidepressants such as Elavil have a similar effect on me but only when taken at pretty high doses, and this leads to a lot of drowsiness the next day. My doctor doesn’t want me to use Trazadone and finally Ambien is sedative for me but the side effects are completely intolerable.

Are there any other drugs that are known to "knock one off?" without leading to extreme drowsiness the next day?

I appreciate the feedback

Thanks a lot
