Hi Steveo

You know I think you are partially right.

For someone who is new to insomnia, I think the natural reaction is to learn all you can about how to deal with the situation. Like any disease or disorder, the more knowledge the better. In my case, if I had never come to these boards I would have never been able to help myself. So many people have encouraging words and advice to give that it certainly gave me lots of inspiration.
I would advise anyone with a sleeping problem to learn all they can...and this is a great place to learn.

But having said that, If I WERE to go through insomnia again, I would rarely, if ever come here....A daily dose other people's problems and pitfalls would not only raise my old anxieties, but maybe even bring up NEW issues as well.

The funny thing though, is a lot of people here probably are thinking what you said out loud....that maybe these boards do more harm than good. It's hard though, to advise someone who is in a panick over insomnia to quit coming here -- without sounding incredibly rude -- although ironically that may be the first step to their recovery.

If you've noticed on archives of these boards that it seems very few people stick around here for more than a few weeks. People come and go....using this place like a pitstop. Only a handful are still around from a year or two back. And it's this group of people who deserve a giant pat on the back for being so supportive and helpful, for they truly are our unsung heros.

I don't know if Paul (the first one) is still around but his posts, though most not directed to me personally, helped beyond belief. His situation seemed exactly like mine -- and by him sharing his experiences in beating this thing gave me (as a novice insomniac) hope and confidence that I could do the same.
Posts by Lynne, Beth, and Hope were also very inspiring and helpful. Thanks to all.
