Hi Molly,

Yea, insomnia sucks. I have it bad. Have you tried just nibbling on a Melatonin pill? Here's the thing I found out about Melatonin:

1) The subliminal form works better (which you hold under your tongue and it goes directly into your blood stream, bypassing the gut)
2) Do Not take an entire pill. When I used the recommended 3-5 mg pill it did NOTHING for me. So I just take a quarter or a half of a 3 mg pill. Less is more.
3) Like everything else, it works sometimes but not others and I have to go off it for awhile.

The great thing about Melatonin is that it is supposed to help a person get off of sleeping pills if they have become dependent on them.
I was, it did.

Use it only as a LAST resort. I don't like the idea of messing with hormones;melatonin is a hormone and there is not enough research. i am only telling you about it because you are sounding desperate.

Also, do you have any problems with Delayed Sleep Phase syndrome; is your body clock possibly in reverse and you can't fall asleep until morning or almost morning, and are awake all night? If so, you might want to buy a light box and attempt to reset your body clock, if it can be done. AND DON'T EXPOSE YOURSELF TO BRIGHT LIGHTS BEFORE BEDTIME;MELATONIN PRODUCTION IN YOUR BODY IS DELAYED BY BRIGHT LIGHTS BEFORE BEDTIME. Look up Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome on the Net. Even most doctors don't know about it.

Aside from this, other things to try include a hot bath/shower before bed, along with a HEATED turkey or HEATED tuna sandwhich. These contain amino acid Tryptophan which, when heated, has a sedating effect on the body. Again, I have not found ANYTHING that will ALWAYS work, so it may help to alternate and juggle remedies so that the body/brain does not develop a "tolerance" to any one--if you can. Sometimes I have had to go many days without sleep and just allow everything to clear my system until i can start over.

I hope you find something that works.
