Do you need a referral to go to a sleep doctor for insurance purposes? I think that is ridiculous that your dr. would say no. Our primary dr.s are not experts in the area of sleep. My daughter's pediatrician kept blowing off my concerns about her sleep issues and I went and saw a sleep specialist (Dr. Ferber) on my own, as my insurance allowed it. Things got better and we no longer see that doctor anymore. No doctor has all the answers. They aren't god and should be open to you seeking help especially with the chronic insomnia that you have been dealing with. But, that is my opinion. You need to be your own advocate and get the help you need. I have been to a sleep clinic for myself as well. They don't have specific things that they look for, sort of speak. There are many issues that cause insomnia and other sleep concerns. The bottom line is that you have insomnia. Whether it is medical or behavioural, they can look at it. There are medical drs. and psychologists usually at them. I don't see why it would hurt for you to go. Just my opinion. :)
