I think genetics can explain why insomnia runs in your family - you guys probably have similar central nervous systems, because you are related. My brother and mother, like me, suffer from insomnia, although theirs is less chronic. My brother also shares a lot of personality traits with me - we are both driven, hard on ourselves, and thus prone to stress, which activates the CNS, which can then lead to insomnia.
