I've tried a whole gamut of medications, including Elavil, Remeron, Serzone, Trazodone, Lorazepam, Benadryl, Ativan, Zopiclone, and Star-Noc.

At first, I was very resistant to taking any kind of medication, but after months of relentless insomnia, I finally buckled.

"Sleeping pills" like benzodiazepines weren't very effective for me because I built up tolerance to them within days or weeks.

The SSRIs made me incredibly ill, forcing me to abandon ship after a day or two.

Thus far, the only thing that has worked is Elavil, a tricyclic antidepressant. The side effects can be rather nasty but it is very effective (for me at least). However I would like to wean myself off it at some point in the near future because I've never liked the idea of long-term drug dependency.
