Tom,

I had read in one of the books that the minimum recommended was 5 1/2 hours. I also was told the same thing by my sleep therapist.

There was a point in time where I was in the same stage you are in (sleep schedule was exactly the same, sleeping between 3-4 hours per night). This obviously meant that I was in bed for up to 2 hours and not sleeping. I used that opportunity to practice relaxing and enjoying being in bed again. Once my sleep schedule was down to 5 1/2 hours, the only time I would leave my bed was when being in bed was no longer comfortable.

I would say that the fact that you are unable to stay awake until midnight is another piece of evidence that your sleep is not broken. I believe that you confidence in your ability to let go and fall back asleep when you wake up in the middle of the night is the problem. I think that if you continue to practice "passively" relaxing in bed when you wake up in the middle of the night, you will eventually get your sleep improved.

HTH,

ZZZ
