In a lot of cases, insomnia is a behavioral issue. As such, behavioral modification is useful in addressing insomnia. Another issue some insomniacs have is that they have unrealistic beliefs and expectations about sleep. An example that applies to you is the belief that you cannot sleep without medication. There are many many people in this forum who believed the same thing until they learned to use behavioral therapy to treat insomnia.
There are two books that talk about how to apply behavioral therapy for insomnia. They are "Say Good Night to Insomnia" and "Desperately Seeking Snoozin".
Behavioral therapy, according to the experts, is the most effective treatment for insomnia. It has personally helped me get eliminate the usage of sleeping pills and allowed me to get my life back.
