You'll go through various stages in the coming
weeks. Don't let that discourage you. I've
started sleep restriction now about four times
so i'm familiar with these stages. The first
week for some reason I often have an immediate
improvement, like you just did. But I usually
have a relapse the second week. But keep with it.
I'm just starting week 5 of the program, as
described in the other book we usually recommend,
"Say Goodnight to Insomnia." I've now gone more
than a week straight with no sleep onset or
sleep maintenance insomnia, despite the fact
that I've had a very difficult time sticking
to the schedule because i'm finding myself
extremely sleepy all day, very hard to say
awake. I think you'll find that this situation
of sleepiness during the day will hit, if it
hasn't already, within a week or two of
starting the program. It's accumulated sleep
debt. It's the force that acts to help make
you sleep. In my case, I think the program
is working better this time around than the
previous times I've tried SR. I'm staying
in bed about 6.5 hours currently, on average.
I've been sleeping an average of about 5.5 hours.
But the key thing is the absence of sleep
onset or sleep maintenance insomnia. I also
am "knocked out" for some part of the night
so I'm getting some deep sleep I think. I'm
still exhausted during the day because I'm
not yet able to get enough sleep. But recovery
is a slow process.
