in my case i could never get past sleep maintenance insomnia. that's why sleep
restriction technique wouldn't work for me.
the sleep debt would cure
the sleep onset insomnia just fine. I'd go right
to sleep when i went to bed, because i'd be so
exhausted. but i had a lot of anxiety symptoms,
i'd wake up at night with tense muscles and
heart pumping. that would keep me awake. lately
i seem to be more relaxed. i've been doing
cognitive behavior therapy for awhile, relaxation
exercises, things to work on reducing the
anxiety. this time around my cognitive behavior
therapist convinced me to make one last try
at sleep restriction. i think also a problem
before was that i was not sufficiently strict
with sticking to the schedule. i also think that
i lengthened the time in bed too quickly. you
have to phase in a longer time in bed gradually
once you don't have sleep onset or maintenance
insomnia. i'm at the point of just starting to
do that this week.
