I would be confident in saying that almost all of us who have suffered from chronic insomnia have reached the level of desperation you speak about. The good news is that there is hope.
For those of you who are new to these forums and have not yet found any type of treatment other than sleep meds, let me tell you that there is hope. Your lives need not be a nightly battle to get the rest that you so desperately need. I've been where some of you are and I can tell you that the depression, anxiety and desperation need not be permanent. Equipped with the right tools, you can and will improve your sleep. And with consistency in your sleep, even if it is just 4 or 5 hours per night, you will fell less stressed. You will feel less anxious. You will feel less depressed. And it won't be long after that you will look at your life like you used to.
If you haven't read about coginitive behavioral therapy or sleep restriction, please do so. If you haven't read Tom-N-Texas's posts please do so. If you haven't read about Chris, Beth, Sleepynj, Otis and countless others, please do so. If you haven't followed Tomwith2cats's struggles and recent success, please do so. These are just a small sample of people who have posted recently about how they stuck with their programs - whether it be through sleep restriction or through Tom-n-Texas's approach - and have had incredible success.
