Dear Perplexed, I can empathize with your frustration and turmoil. I suffered with insomnia for nine years. I had sleep maintenance insomnia, but also had trouble faling asleep. It would take me 4 hours to fall asleep and then I would be up after ane hour or two, never to return to sleep at all. I also was up almost 3to 4 nights a week completely, sometimes two nights in a row. I never could sleep past 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning either. Needless to say it was a horerendous time of my life. Now ten years later I am sleeping about 7-8 hours most nights. I still have trouble at times falling asleep, especially if I am travelling or have company staying at my house. The difference between now and then is that I have accepted insomnia completely, and if I cannot sleep I just take it in stride, knowing that I will be tired the next day, but so what.....I think the biggest problem with insomnia is the constant worrying, which creates anxiety, and the self fulfilling prophecy of not being able to sleep. Since you have had problems with depression in the past and have been on antidepressants, your body may be going through some sort of withdrawal as well. I hate to recommend taking drugs because I truly despise them, but since you are starting a job where you need to be focused, awake and intelligible, maybe you could try a low dose of a different antideppressant. It doesn't have to be forever, but maybe a bit of time just to give you confidence on the job, and then you can start to develop other techniques to heal this problem. Allowing this insomnia to rule your life is the reason it is taking hold so fervently. If you pay it less attention and I know it is difficult, you will see that thre condition might improve tremendouly.I drink Sleepytime tea with Valerian at night, but I brew it in warm milk which has tryptophan and add a bit of honey which has sleeping properties also. It seems to work well for me. Keep your chin up.....Hope
