you mean you have been taking Ativan at 8 mg for 16 yrs???? Ativan does not cause insomnia at all, in fact, it is one of the best insomnia medications out there when used with caution. However, if you have been taking it continuously for that long your body has become immune to it and it is not helping your insomnia anymore.
It may be worth seeing a sleep specialist or a psychiatrist that may be more knowledgeable about sleep meds: many people have good luck with Trazodone, Remeron, Seroquel etc....there are other options out there.
