Dear Brightonbelle
Glad my post reassured you that you are not alone in having this problem – it really is very frustrating, particularly when you try (as I have in the past) to explain to people that you might not be able to attend an event as you are unlikely to sleep the night before!
I can really identify with that ‘excitement’ feeling that both you and Sova describe – it’s probably akin to what normal sleepers experience on the eve of their wedding or some other momentous occasion (whereas probably all that is happening is that I’m due to go out for a meal or something simple like that!)
All I can say is that from what I’ve learnt the idea is if you do something enough times it becomes part of your daily routine and therefore will eventually cause any extreme alertness/anxiety/excitement etc about it to fade just because it is so matter of course.
I think a lot of getting over this has to do with also accepting that, initially at any rate, you probably aren’t going to sleep before something planned but if you do it enough times you eventually will. I did sleep a bit last night for example in spite of having several things to do today (including keeping an appointment). Some of this may also have been due to extreme exhaustion, eventually you get so tired you couldn’t care less what’s happening the next day and your body finally overpowers your brain!
As I said in my previous post I have been helped a lot by CBT. I don’t know whether you have tried this ? It has also helped to come off all sleep medication (I haven’t taken anything for over a year)…I am not anti medication if it helps but in my case it was making me worse in the long run..
I hope this continues to help, it really is a tough one. I sometimes think that it is just not worth feeling so ill through lack of sleep just to achieve some normality in my life but my small successes spur me on.
