My experience has been that with relentless insomnia, I started to feel depressed, almost clinically depressed. I would go to therapy and we would talk about what I was depressed about and work on that. I always felt though that if I could sleep, I would not be depressed. No sleep, depression, more no sleep. That is how I see it. I think most people deprived of sleep for a long period of time will become depressed. It is only natural. You are always feeling out of it and you have nothing to look forward. Also, depression supposedly causes early awakening. I am not sure this is entirely true since I still wake up in the middle of the night and very early in the morning and I certainly don't feel depressed. I am not depressed because I am able to go back to sleep most of the time now.
