Whenever I wake up in the middle of the night (and it seems to happen quite frequently), my response is always the same. I just think to myself, "It doesn't matter if I fall back asleep or not. I will just lie here and enjoy my bed. I will get up whenever the alarm clock goes off."
It works every time. Sometimes it takes longer than others. The kiss of death for me is if I check what time it is. If I do that then I start doing math in my head. How much sleep have I gotten? How much will I get if I don't fall asleep right away? Will I feel crummy? All that stuff. But if I don't bother with the clock, I always fall back asleep.
BTW, this approach didn't just happen one night. I had to convince myself over many many many nights that it was okay to wake up and not fall back asleep. This allowed me to no longer feel anxious about waking up.
