I have this problem all the time. I stopped sleeping pills about 6 months ago, and keep hoping that eventually I will just sleep through the night. So far, it hasn't happened.
As I have posted before, I have a lot of success dealing with the problem by listening to books on tape on a walkman (using earphones so my husband isn't disturbed.) This way, I concentrate on the book being read (there are some wonderful readers "performing" these books--great, calming, gentle voices!) and I don't obsess about getting back to sleep or my personal problems. It really helps and has the advantage of letting me "read" a lot of stuff I wouldn't get to ordinarily. Of course, you have to be prepared to miss a lot of the book, because you've fallen back to sleep! On a good night, I'll have heard about 5 minutes of the tape, and have to listen again the next night. On a bad night, I might actually hear and remember several tapes.
