I think it's most important what you DON'T think; that is, not letting yourself get caught up in a negative thought pattern. When I was first struggling with the insomnia, I would automatically think, "oh, this is terrible, I'm awake, I won't get back to sleep, I can't take this anymore" upon waking. One night I woke up and this thought pattern popped immediately into my head; but when I looked at the clock, it was morning and I had slept 7 hours in a row.

You have to challenge these automatic thoughts with others, such as, "well, I usually fall back asleep, and if I don't, it's no big deal, I can function on less sleep than I'd like, I've done it before", until THESE thoughts become automatic. I found that just trying to bore myself doesn't work if the negative thoughts are lurking in the back of my mind.

I also never look at the clock unless I'm pretty sure it's about time to get up. If I see the time it triggers that negative thinking. It helps that I'm very nearsighted and can't see it unless I put my face right up to it...but clock watching is definitely a no-no for me.
